Biography
I'm Robert Bednark, known as "Rob" or "Robbie". I was born
in Minnesota in 1969. I grew up in rural Minnesota in dairy farming country.
My parents owned and operated a manufacturing company out in the country
that they built in 1950 and ran until they sold it in 1979. The company employed 10 people and
manufactured wooden bed frames, the internal support used in box springs,
the part of the bed under the mattress.
I have 6 siblings -- 3 sisters and 3 brothers. I am the youngest by 10 years.
My father died in 1980, and my mother now lives in Fountain Hills, AZ.
I graduated from Healy High School in Pierz, Minnesota in 1987. I attended
St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minnesota from 1987-1992, and graduated
with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science (BSCS) and a minor in Human
Relations.
I worked for Com Squared Systems in Minneapolis from 1992-1996 as a Software
Engineer, writing client-server database software in DOS, MS-Windows, and UNIX, using Pascal, Visual
Basic, and C. Sara and I moved to Oregon in November, 1996, and I started
working as a contractor for Informix in December, 1996. I became a
permanent Informix employee on 1/1/98. Informix was purchased by IBM
in July, 2001, so I now work for IBM. At Informix I worked on a
build team doing build and release engineering of database servers, working on Unix
and MS-Windows using Perl, Clearcase, Bourne shell (sh), and C; I also
did a competitive analysis, and worked on a web-search product similar to Google.
Since Dec 2001 I've been working on the test team for SAN File System.

Ideas That Have Influenced Me
(updated 5/22/02)
- Two things at a time - work on only 2 things at a time; don't thrash about multi-tasking many things [Peter Drucker]
- Abandon sinkholes - know when to stop putting effort into things that aren't becoming successful [Peter Drucker]
- Focus on strengths - do what you're good at, and give tasks you're not good at to others [Peter Drucker]
- Learning by isolating: for computer programming, I have found that my "learn" scripts are very productive; the idea is to isolate out the problem, to eliminate all other variables and concentrate on what I want to learn
- Processes: it's important to document processes at work, to write them in a simple recipe, rather than trying to remember them. This frees up the mind to be a processor rather than memory.
- Fast prototype / full-incremental implementation:
in software, it's important to get a simple application written quickly, so you have something to work with, rather than trying to design the perfect application prior to implementing. Do small, quick iterations of design/implement rather than a single big design followed by a single big implementation. This way, you get more feedback more often, and can incorporate the feedback quicker. [5/22/2002]
- Requirements: for software, it's important to capture the requirements explicitly, rather than just keeping them in your head and writing the design or application without having the requirements captured. [5/22/2002]
- Working backwards: for software, in can be valuable to work backwards for large, complex tasks. Start with the desired result, and then work backwards, determining what each component needs to do. [5/22/2002]
-
Choice: importance of being aware of choices one is unconsciously making. If you are aware of the choices that you make, then you can always re-evaluate them and change them, rather than being stuck.
-
Motivation: importance of awareness of motivation
-
Inspiration: importance of actively doing things to find inspiration.
-
Intention: importance of being clear of one's intentions at any given time.
-
Perception: importance of perception as opposed to fact/truth
-
Intention/pragmatism: importance of being aware of intentions and objectives, rather than just principles (as described by Hayakawa and De Bono)
-
Perception: Edward de Bono's ideas of perception and human behavior as told
in his book "I Am Right You Are Wrong : From Rock Logic to Water Logic".
- Myth of objectivity: everything is subjective, including science and news.
A choice is always made when determining what to study and what to report.
-
Subjectivity: importance of subjectivity (individual reality, emotions,
spirituality) in a society that stresses objectivity (single reality independent
of individual, facts, science)
-
Consciousness: distinction of different kinds of consciousness and need for
different ones
- Difference between reports, inferences, and judgments (as described in S. I. Hayakawa's book "Language in Thought and Nature").
- No word has the same meaning twice (as described in S. I. Hayakawa's book "Language in Thought and Nature").
- Abstraction: importance of various levels of abstraction in communication and thinking (as described in S. I. Hayakawa's book "Language in Thought and Nature").
- Deming's ideas of quality.
- Noam Chomsky's ideas of democracy.
- Investing: Warren Buffett's philosophy and techniques of investing.
- Technology: Neil Postman's ideas of the negative impacts of technology and our unquestioning attitude towards it.
- Focus: be aware of what you're focusing on. If you're not happy, change the focus.
- Preference: how preferences are often masked as fact or reality.
- Small things making big differences (epidemic behaviors, memes, chaos) (from book "The Tipping Point" by Malcolm Gladwell)
- Idea of pragmatic/contextual model being more valid than organismic model (from book "Altering Fate" by Michael Lewis)
- Feedback loops / adaptive systems -- idea that everything is feedback, which in turn changes the system. So facts, analyses, statements, are all feedback. We cannot say something without it
modifying our environment. Also, it's important to seek and process feedback so you can
consciously adapt. Ask your customers how you are doing. And you are always your own customer,
too.
- Small things done regularly add up over time.
